Tuskegee Airmen: Black pilots with Red Tails
During WWII the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of all African-American fighter pilots, won fame as the Red Tails. In their P-51 Mustang fighters the Tuskegee Airmen escorted B-17 bombers into Germany, and usually out again! Although it's a myth that under Red Tails escort no bomber was ever lost (that would have been a miracle - not war), it's certainly true that the Red Tailed Tuskegee Airmen lost very few of their charges. It's also true that bomber pilots often specifically asked for the Red Tails in preference over any other escort, because being escorted by the Tuskegee Airmen considerably increased the bombers' chance of coming home safe.
